Dishwasher installation can be a daunting task for many homeowners. However, with some basic tools and by following the manufacturer’s and installer’s instructions, you can usually install a dishwasher yourself in two to four hours. Dishwasher installation can include removing the old appliance (if necessary), connecting water lines and electric lines, and leveling the new dishwasher. Depending on the model, you may need to remove the toe panel below the door or loosen and flatten each of the leveling legs in each corner of the base. You will need to save the wood runners from the box that the dishwasher arrived in to use as shims in wider cabinet openings to help your appliance sit flush with the countertop and cabinets.
After removing the old dishwasher, disconnect the drain hose from your sink tail pipe or garbage disposal unit. Connect the new drain hose to the dishwasher, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Make sure the hose arches up high enough to prevent dirty water from flowing back into the kitchen sink.
Prepare the new dishwasher by tipping it on its side and removing the front access panel. If your dishwasher will be draining into the sink tail pipe or garbage disposal, you will need to cut a length of tubing to fit from the end of the dishwasher drain hose to the sink faucet. Attach the tubing to the drain hose and secure it with a stainless steel hose clamp. Tape the hot-water line and electrical wiring to the floor to keep them out of the way while you’re working on your dishwasher installation.
Once the new dishwasher is prepared, tip it back into an upright position and slide it into place in your cabinet opening. Connect the power cord, water supply line and drain hose to the dishwasher, following the instructions in your manual. It’s best to have a second person to help you lift the dishwasher and guide it into place.
Once the new dishwasher is in place and anchored, run a test cycle to make sure that all the connections are secure. If there are any problems, turn off the electricity at your circuit breaker before making any repairs and consult with a licensed plumber to resolve the issue. If everything is in good condition, you can now turn on the water and power and enjoy your new dishwasher! It’s recommended to have a licensed electrician handle any electrical installations. However, if you feel comfortable tackling the plumbing and electrical connections yourself, this project shouldn’t be too difficult for most homeowners.
