Installing a dishwasher is not a complex job, but it is a project that should be done by an experienced home handyman or plumber. This is to avoid any damage or other issues that may come from improper installation. Dishwasher installation includes removing the old appliance (if applicable), connecting water lines, connecting electric lines, leveling your dishwasher and running tests to ensure that it is functioning properly. It is important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your particular model dishwasher when completing this task.
Before you start the dishwasher installation process, make sure to turn off the power at your circuit breaker and the water supply line at the shut-off valve under the sink. You also need to make sure that you have the correct cabinet opening dimensions for the dishwasher and enough space for a drain hose and sink air gap, if applicable.
Open the box that your dishwasher arrived in and remove all shipping materials from the appliance. Use a screwdriver to unscrew the toe panel at the base of the dishwasher and twist the leveling legs to shorten them to make removal easier. Once the appliance is out of the box, carefully tip it on its back and slide it onto a towel or piece of cardboard to protect your floors from scuff marks and scratches.
Once the dishwasher is upright, remove the front access panel and connect the remaining electrical wiring per your product manual instructions. Route the power cord, drain hose and water supply line through the cabinet opening in the sink side. The drain hose may be fitted with a “high loop” connection that arches upward to allow it to connect to the sink drain tailpiece, garbage disposal or an air gap, depending on your kitchen layout. Ensure that the high loop is not higher than the dishwasher drain inlet to prevent backwash from the kitchen sink into the dishwasher.
Many newer dishwashers are connected to the water line using a quick-connect fitting, which is a longer version of the same type of water supply tube used for sink faucets and toilets. You can purchase these at any hardware or home improvement store. When assembling the water supply connection, read your dishwasher’s manual for proper steps on how to assemble and tighten the connection. If your dishwasher uses compression fittings, you may need to add teflon tape or joint compound to get a leak-free fit.
Most newer dishwashers have a rear set of leveling legs that can be adjusted to match the height of your counters and cabinets. Using a level, measure the cabinet opening height and adjust the rear leveling legs accordingly. If the appliance is tilted, you can loosen and retighten the leveling legs to raise or lower the dishwasher as needed.
Close the dishwasher door and test it to make sure that all connections are secure and the machine is level. Once it is, screw in the anchor brackets to stabilize its position. Plug in the power cord and drain hose, then turn on the dishwasher by opening the shut-off valve under your sink and turning on the water at the dishwasher water inlet. Allow the dishwasher to run a full cycle, then check for any leaks or loose connections.
