When it comes to household chores, there are very few kitchen appliances that beat the time and energy savings of a dishwasher. Dishwasher installation may seem intimidating, but it’s actually a fairly simple process with a few steps and the right tools.
For safety (and mess-avoidance), shut off electricity to the dishwasher at your circuit breaker and disconnect the water supply using the valve under your sink. If you’re installing a new dishwasher or moving an existing one, use a template located on the bottom of the unit to help guide you in drilling the proper mounting holes and extending the water supply and drain lines.
Before beginning the actual Dishwasher installation, lay the appliance on its back and remove the front access panel. Some models have a drip tray with sensors that will need to be disconnected, too. Next, identify and set aside any tools or additional parts packaged separately from the dishwasher itself. With the help of another person, tilt the dishwasher upright and move it toward your cabinet opening. For ease of installation, route the power cord, water supply line and drain hose as close to the dishwasher as possible, avoiding unnecessary bends or kinks.
Once you’ve positioned the dishwasher, turn it off at your circuit breaker and disconnect the water line, then use a wrench to tighten and loosen the anchor screws connecting it to your countertop and cabinets. If you’re removing an existing dishwasher, note that the connections may have water in them, so it’s best to have a bowl and some rags handy. After detaching the dishwasher, be sure to re-secure any anchor screws to ensure they stay put once you reinstall it.
If the dishwasher’s location isn’t directly over your sink, you will need to install a “high loop” drain connection. This is a special piping system that works as an air gap, preventing backwash into the sink. It isn’t necessary for all installations, but it’s a good idea if you live in an area with hard water.
Once you’ve finished making the pre-installation connections, replace the front access panel, snake the power cord through the terminal box and connect it according to your owner’s manual’s instructions. Connect the drain hose to the drain port and open the hot water shut-off valve to turn on your dishwasher. Run a test cycle to make sure everything runs smoothly. If not, use your manual’s troubleshooting guides to locate and fix any issues.
