If you are handy and have a good understanding of plumbing and electrical work, it is possible to install a dishwasher yourself. This is a fairly simple project that can be completed in two to four hours. However, if you’re not comfortable working with electricity, it is best to have a licensed electrician make the electrical connections for you.
Before starting the installation, turn off the power supply to your kitchen at the circuit breaker. You also need to shut off the water supply, which is usually accomplished by opening the valve under your sink.
Next, clean the area where you plan to install the dishwasher and remove any screws or metal mounting brackets that secured the old one in place. Using the template provided with the new unit, mark the location for the drain line and water inlet solenoid valve. Ensure that the inlet valve is at least 12 inches from the sink shut-off valve and is not blocked by other appliances.
Once the holes are drilled, prepare the sink cabinet for the dishwasher by removing any wood trim or other materials covering the wall behind the sink. Drill a 12-inch hole through the countertop into which you will feed the soft copper tubing for the dishwasher’s water supply. Connect the tubing to the shut-off valve with a soldering gun. Then, attach the new drain hose to the garbage disposer with a stainless-steel hose clamp. Make sure the hose does not extend higher than the inlet valve and the drain inlet on the dishwasher.
If your new dishwasher comes with a built-in drain pump, you can skip this step. Then, if you need to run the water supply line or electrical wires, use the proper tools to make the connections. If you’re replacing a dishwasher with a hard-wired model, you should have a licensed electrician come and replace the outlet, install a GFI breaker, and wire the dishwasher.
Lastly, level the dishwasher with a straight edge or spirit level. If you’re having a hard time getting it straight, you can adjust the front leveling legs with a screwdriver. It’s a good idea to do this before you connect the drain hose, so that you don’t have to move it again.
Before you put the cover back on, test the dishwasher by plugging in the power cord and turning on the water supply. Afterward, check the water and electrical connections for leaks or looseness. It’s a good idea to have an assistant pull the power cord, water supply and drain hoses slack while you make these final connections. This way, you don’t have to worry about a high loop or a cord caught under the bottom of the dishwasher when you close the access panel. Once you’re satisfied, replace the access panel and finish the job. For an extra measure of safety, run a full cycle of dishes before you turn the power and water back on. Also, be sure to read the dishwasher’s manual to make sure you have everything connected properly.
