Dishwashers are a great labor-saving appliance and help make the job of cooking & cleaning easier for you and your family. Installing a new dishwasher may seem intimidating but it is a relatively simple task that any homeowner can do themselves.
Before starting, take a moment to think through the features you want in your new appliance (like a third rack for flatware). This can help you determine what size and model to purchase. It’s also a good idea to read the manufacturer’s product manual as installation steps will vary slightly by unit.
Turn off the power to your dishwasher and water line at the circuit breaker and shutoff valve under the sink. Place a shallow pan, bucket or rag beneath the drain hose to catch any water that might spill from disconnecting the lines.
Carefully lay your new dishwasher on its back to gain access to the connections underneath. Remove the front access panel with a screwdriver and locate the wire connection housing that houses the electrical, plumbing and drain hose connections. It likely has a cover you’ll need to remove and replace. Identify the wires that connect to each other and ensure they are the same color before connecting them. Use wire nuts to tighten and secure the connections.
If your new dishwasher comes with a drain hose, press it on the drain outlet and attach the hose clamp provided. If your old drain hose is still attached to the garbage disposal, you’ll need to remove it from its hookup location and route the new hose to where you removed the old one (typically to the drain pipe or sink pipe). Be sure to wrap the new supply line’s male threads with Teflon tape to ensure a leak-free seal and tighten the fittings carefully.
Ensure your dishwasher is properly vented using an air gap. This is required by most local building codes to prevent dirty sink water from flowing back into the clean dishwasher water. Installing an air gap is simple and can be accomplished by drilling a hole in the countertop, routing the new ductwork to the vent and securing the gap with a waterproof silicone caulk.
Screw the metal brackets to the underside of your countertop if your unit requires them. Otherwise, you’ll need to place the dishwasher on its front legs and use a level to ensure it sits flush and is perfectly straight from side to side. Lastly, tighten the single screw on each of the dishwasher’s four front legs to secure it in place.
Plug in the power cord and connect the water supply line, drain hose and electrical wiring as directed in your dishwasher’s product manual. Test the dishwasher and ensure all of its settings work. Turn electricity back on at the circuit breaker and water supply back on at the shut-off valve under your sink. Enjoy your newly installed dishwasher!
