Dishwasher installation is a simple project that can save you a lot of tedious hand washing and scrubbing. A new dishwasher can also help keep your dishes sparkling clean and looking good for years to come. But, first, you’ll need to prepare the area for the dishwasher by shutting off water and power and removing the old one. Once that’s done, you’ll need to connect the water line, drain hose and power cord.
Begin by opening the box that your dishwasher came in and removing any shipping materials, including plastic wrap or protective styrofoam from the interior. Set aside any tools or additional parts packaged separately in the box. With the assistance of at least one other person, tilt the appliance on its back and remove the front access panel. If your dishwasher model has a drip tray with sensors, disconnect those. Next, snake the power cord through the terminal box and connect any remaining wires per your product manual’s instructions. You may want to replace the terminal box cover at this point if it’s loose or missing. Finally, attach the drain hose to the drain port and route it either to your sink tail pipe or garbage disposal unit.
If your dishwasher has a rear hookup, you’ll need to open the kickplate (a thin rectangular access panel at the base of the appliance) to gain access to the junction box. This is a square metal box with three exposed electrical wires going into it. You may find a cover attached to the kickplate, which you’ll need to remove. The wires leading into the junction box will be either black, white and bare copper. You’ll also find a round opening at the bottom of the box that a water supply line will need to fit through. Before inserting the water line, you should prep it with Teflon tape for a leak-free connection.
The remainder of the dishwasher installation steps are the same for both a front and a rear hookup. Connect the water supply line to the dishwasher inlet, and tighten the water hose clamp. You may need to add an adapter elbow, which you can get at plumbing supply houses and hardware stores, to avoid the spigot sticking out from the front of the dishwasher.
Once you’ve connected the water supply line and turned off the water at the shutoff valve, turn on the dishwasher and run a full cycle. If you have any issues, follow your dishwasher’s product manual’s troubleshooting steps to determine what is causing the problem. Then, fix the issue to prevent future problems with your new dishwasher.
