Dishwasher installation is a relatively simple process if you follow the proper plumbing and electrical requirements and the appliance manufacturer’s instructions. However, the cost of hiring a professional to install your dishwasher can quickly add up as these professionals are often required to make a number of special trips to your home to obtain materials, pull permits and ensure that the installation meets local codes.
To save money and do the installation yourself, you’ll need a few tools including an adjustable wrench, a screwdriver, a pair of pliers, a tape measure and a level. A shallow pan, bucket and rags are also useful to catch any water that may drain from the lines when they’re disconnected.
Begin by shutting off the electricity to the dishwasher at your circuit breaker and the water supply line at the shutoff valve under the sink. Next, remove the front access panel from the dishwasher and lay it on its back, if possible. Depending on where the connections are located inside the terminal box, you may need to remove the kick plate at the bottom of the dishwasher to reach the wire connection fittings.
Carefully disconnect the power cord from the terminal box, then remove the cover and loosen the screw that connects the grounding wire to it. Turn the dishwasher upside down to reveal a track for the water supply line and another for the drain hose. Remove the old water line from the knockout plug on the sink pipe or garbage disposal unit and route the new one in place, following the dishwasher’s directions for the specific type of line you have (you can usually use plumber’s tape to make a waterproof seal).
Once the new water supply line is connected, you can start making the power cord connections in the terminal box. The wires in the cord should be labelled to identify their connections. Connect the green grounding wire to the green terminal screw, the white neutral wire to the white dishwasher lead and the black hot wire to the black dishwasher lead using twist-on wire connectors. Then, reattach the cover to the terminal box and tighten the screw.
With the dishwasher in place, you can now connect the power cord and run a test to ensure that all connections are secure. Afterward, you can attach the brackets that anchor it to the underside of the countertop and to adjacent cabinets and put the front access panel back on.
Then, use a level to check that the dishwasher is flat front to back and side to side, as well as checking the drain hose connection for a tight fit. When you’re finished, all that remains is to reconnect the dishwasher power cord and drain hose, then plug it in, hook up the dishwasher’s water supply line and run a second test to ensure that everything works properly. Once you’re confident, you can enjoy your new kitchen addition!
