Dishwasher installation may seem daunting, but if you follow the plumbing and electrical requirements in your product’s use and care guide (and, of course, your local building codes), it’s not too difficult. Before you begin, make sure you have all the right tools and supplies. Your dishwasher delivery will include smaller items like screws and brackets, but you should also have some standard home improvement tools on hand.
Start by carefully tipping your new dishwasher on its back so you can access the connections behind it more easily. Take off the front access panel, then remove the screw that holds the junction box cover on (it’s a square metal box with three exposed wires inside). Next, feed the three exposed wires from your power cord through the round opening in the box. You can then feed the water and drain hoses through the gap left in your cabinet.
If you’re installing a new dishwasher and don’t already have an existing one, it’s worth having a plumber visit to help with your kitchen renovation. They’ll make sure your new dishwasher is installed in line with your state or territory plumbing codes, and check that the drainage and power supply lines are connected properly. This will help prevent future leaks and clogs and ensure that your dishwasher is safe to use.
Once you’re ready to get started, read your appliance’s product manual and the installation instructions carefully. It’s also a good idea to have someone else join you during the process to help lift and tilt the dishwasher as needed.
You’ll need a drill, hole saw or another means of making a 100 x 150mm hole in your benchtop, as well as the correct tap and drain connection parts. You’ll also need a new power outlet with the correct cabling (your electrician can supply this), as well as a sealant to protect your benchtops from steam and water damage.
Make sure you turn off the electricity and water at your circuit breaker and shut off valve before starting work. It’s also a good idea, if possible, to disconnect any old appliances or pipes nearby so that they don’t interfere with the installation.
Once you’ve made all the necessary connections and have checked everything over, it’s time to put your new dishwasher back in place and test it out! Run a full cycle and ensure that all the settings work, then grab a pair of pliers to adjust the legs under your dishwasher so that it’s flush with your cabinets. Using a level, check that it’s sitting flat — otherwise you could have drainage issues. Finally, replace the front access panel and you’re done!
Remember, only licensed tradespeople can touch your home’s wiring, sewer or water pipes. Doing any of this work yourself could result in a massive fine and a voided warranty if something goes wrong.
