A new dishwasher may be a big investment, but with proper installation it can add value to your home and ease your daily chores. The process can seem complicated and intimidating, but it’s actually quite simple to do on your own. Follow the steps in your dishwasher’s manual to disconnect and remove the old one, then connect the water supply, drain hose and power to the new one. After the unit is connected, slide it partway into the opening and adjust the leveling legs.
The first thing you should do is read the manual that comes with your new dishwasher, then reread it. This step is crucial to ensuring that you understand how the appliance works, and how it should be installed. Once you know what is expected, you can prepare the kitchen for the installation and avoid any pitfalls that could cost you time or money in the long run.
Next, get everything you’ll need to complete the Dishwasher installation, including a few basic tools and supplies. You’ll want to cover the area beneath the sink with a blanket or old rug to protect it from splatters and spills while you work. You’ll also need a pair of adjustable wrenches, a screwdriver, a tape measure and a set of pliers. A level and a rag are also important to have on hand to clean up any drips or spills.
Identify the place where the dishwasher will be installed, and find the access panel to the cabinet underneath it. Open the panel, and locate the junction box, which will look like a square metal box with three exposed electrical wires going to it. Remove the screws holding the cover in place, then feed the three wires from the power cord into the junction box using a screwdriver or socket wrench.
Locate the drain outlet on the back of your new dishwasher, and identify the drainage tube that will need to be attached. Press the drain hose onto the inlet, and use an adjustable wrench to tighten it until snug. Some dishwashers come with the drain hose already attached, while others require that you install it separately.
You’ll also need to install a drain line that goes from the dishwasher inlet to the sink pipe, or garbage disposal, where it will be connected. This is the same type of drain line that feeds sink faucets and toilets, and it’s a simple connection to make. Most dishwashers come with a brass fitting that attaches to the water supply pipe, and you can connect it to a faucet valve by turning it clockwise with a wrench.
Then, route the drain hose to your garbage disposal or the sink pipe and secure it with a clamp. If your dishwasher came with trim pieces, attach those now. Once you’re finished, you can turn on the water and electricity and check for any leaks or problems with the connections. Once you’re satisfied that everything is working, you can then move the dishwasher into its final resting position in your cabinets.
