Dishwasher installation is a common DIY home improvement project that can add a significant amount of value to your home. If you’re installing a new dishwasher, be sure to read the appliance’s product manual before you begin so you know how to properly and safely prepare your kitchen for the dishwasher and complete all necessary connections. Also, if you’re not comfortable with electrical wiring or plumbing work, it’s a good idea to call a professional for assistance.
Before you get started, shut off the water supply valve and electricity at your circuit breaker panel to prevent any accidents during the how to hook up a dishwasher process. Then, remove the old drain hose from either your sink pipe or garbage disposal and route the new one to the dishwasher’s drain port. Also, ensure the water supply line adapter is connected to the water valve correctly by tightening it with pliers an additional 1/4 to 1/2 turns.
If you’re hard-wiring your dishwasher, make sure the proper breaker is switched off at your home’s circuit breaker panel, and that there’s no power running to it by touching a noncontact voltage tester to the wire connector. Next, use a tubing cutter to cut off the end of your copper dishwasher line and start snaking it through the hole in the back of the cabinet (you may need to mark the location on the wall before removing the old plumbing). Once you reach the hot water valve under your sink, disconnect the existing tubing and connect the new line.
After the plumbing is complete, remove the dishwasher from its box and lay it on its back with a piece of cardboard or towel underneath to protect your flooring. If the unit has a toekick, you can unscrew it by hand or with a wrench (be sure to hold the screws securely as they’re fairly loose). You will need to remove the front access panel and the power cord connection cover, as well.
Before you begin connecting the power cord and drain hose, open the dishwasher’s junction box and make the following connections: Connect the green wire from your appliance cord to the green grounding screw. Connect the white neutral wire to the white dishwasher lead and the black hot wire to the black dishwasher lead using twist-on wire connectors or wire nuts (if applicable). Connect the cover plate to the junction box, and replace the front access panel on the bottom of the dishwasher. With the help of at least one other person, lift and tilt the dishwasher to its desired location and rest it on the cardboard or towel to avoid scratching the floors. Then, route the power cord and drain hose through the access holes and connect them per your product manual instructions.
