Dishwasher installation is a project you can do yourself, but it’s important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully. It’s also smart to have a plumber or other professional help you out with plumbing and electrical connections, since touching your home’s wiring, sewer, water pipes and other major appliances is illegal unless done by a licensed tradesperson.
Before beginning the dishwasher installation process, turn off your household water and power supply at the main switch or breaker box. Then place the dishwasher on a large piece of cardboard or towel to prevent it from scratching the floor while you move it into position. Use a spirit level to ensure the dishwasher is level from front to back and side to side before you screw down the anchor brackets.
If you’re replacing an existing dishwasher, disconnect the drain hose from the sink pipe or garbage disposal and remove the old water line by unscrewing it. You’ll likely need a new water line that connects from the existing valve to the dishwasher inlet, and you’ll probably want to replace the 90-degree water hose fitting with one designed for this application. Check the dishwasher’s product manual for the exact type of line and fitting you need. If you need to cut your own line, use a tubing cutter with a long, sharp blade. Make sure the new line you cut is the same diameter as the existing line or smaller.
When you’re ready to install your new dishwasher, lay it down on the cabinet and raise it onto the brackets if necessary. Then route the hoses, drain hose and power cord through the access panel in the bottom of the cabinet. You may need to drill holes in the cabinet for running these lines, but this will depend on the layout of your cabinets.
Some models require you to connect the inlet hose to the hot water supply line and not the cold water line. Others have a choice of connecting to either. Consult the dishwasher’s product manual to determine the best method for your model.
Once you’ve made the connections, you’re ready to set up and use your dishwasher. Before you do, though, make a test cycle to verify that it works properly.
Some manufacturers include a special clamp that holds the drain hose in place. If your model doesn’t, you can buy a standard one from most hardware stores or home centers. Then secure the hose to the drain inlet using the provided clamp. The hose should be high enough to allow for proper drainage, and it should be angled so that it doesn’t drip in the back of the dishwasher. If you’re not using a clamp, you can attach the hose to the drain outlet with duct tape. This helps ensure a tight seal and prevents leaks. For your convenience, you can also purchase a flexible stainless steel drain hose from your local hardware store or home center. Make sure the hose is centered and isn’t too tight or it could kink or bend.
